Gold production
in Zimbabwe fell by 8% during the five months of May compared to the same
period in 2013, according to figures provided by the Chamber of Mines of the
country.
Gold mined
during the period was 5,517 kg from 6,022 kg produced in five months to May
last year.
The Chamber of
Mines figures show that in four months to April this year, gold accounted for
about one third of the total value of minerals produced.
Output last year
was 14 tons, down 4.49% to a value of about 626.11 million dollars.
Gold remains the
mainstay of mining production in the country and Zimbabwe plans to become one
of the top five gold producing countries in Africa.
The Zimbabwean
government intends to reorganize the gold sector and legalize operations gold
diggers.
Zimbabwe has
over 20,000 gold miners whose production represented so greatly to the
country's gold production.
Chamber of Mines
of Zimbabwe also said gold production could reach 50 tons in the next five
years.
